  • Our focus… to serve the hospital…
  • The hope… to make a difference…
  • The benefit… being a part of a caring organization

The University Medical Center Brackenridge (UMCB) has been an essential medical resource for the people of Austin and Central Texas, serving as the only Level One Trauma Center for adults in the region. UMCB is known for innovations, cutting-edge technology, academic medicine and education. Each of these contribute to advancing healthcare to the next level.

We offer volunteer opportunities throughout the hospital including: the Information Desk, Specialty Care Clinics, the Gift Shop, Sewing Room (making items that benefit our patients), Day Surgery, patient advocacy, acute care floors, ICU (Intensive Care Unit), and ED (Emergency Department).  Expected tasks include:  greeting, ushering, transporting, checking on, visiting with, and making deliveries to guests throughout the hospital; stocking supplies; cleaning equipment; and clerical support.

  • Seton policy requires a minimum time commitment of 6 continuous months.  Our volunteer shifts are 3 hours once a week.  Dependability and punctuality are critical.

Undergraduate Students

  • Applications are accepted on the first day of each semester starting at 12:00 a.m., midnight. Applications received outside of this time frame are not considered.
    • The next day to submit applications is January 19, 2016, for the spring semester.
  • At least 40 of the first applications received, based on time stamp, are reviewed in search for the first 20 viable applicants to move on to be interviewed.
    • These are typically received within the first 5 minutes
    • Please only submit one (1) application. Multiples will lead to disqualification.
  • The application instructs, “If you are currently employed, please list your employer.”  When completing this portion, indicate you are an undergraduate student and which college or university you attend.  For example:  Undergraduate student at St. Edwards University

Application Process

(takes at least 1 month to complete from interview to being approved to serve)

  • Complete online volunteer application (linked to this website)
  • Applications reviewed and evaluated
  • You will receive either a declination letter or an invite to interview
    • At interview, you’ll be asked to sign forms agreeing to have a National Criminal Background Check (CBC) run. If you chose not to do this we cannot move forward with your application.  If your CBC does not clear, you cannot move forward in the process.
  • After the interviews, those chosen will be notified by email and invited to the next orientation.  For those that do not hear back, your application did not go through.

Health Requirements for ALL Volunteers

  • Immunization Records
    • MMR – Measles, Mumps, Rubella
    • Varicella – Chicken Pox (either history of disease or immunization + booster)
      • If records cannot be located, a titer – a blood test for concentrations of these immunizations – will need to be performed
      • Undergrad students are responsible for getting these done via personal physician or student health
      • All others are asked to take care of these via personal physician, but may use Seton Occupational Health – hours and locations for offices provided
  • TB Tests
    • Two (2) must be completed within 14-21days of each other
  • Flu Shot
    • Required of all volunteers during flu season
      • If you chose not to get a flu shot, it’s suggested that you take a leave of absence during flu season.

Volunteers will need to purchase a uniform, and pay for the criminal background check processing fee. (Checks and cash only)

  • Fees: $22
    Uniform: $22

You will also need an ID badge; this process will be explained at orientation.
