How to Start Prepping Your Skin for a Summer in the Sun

While that may mean fun days ahead, it also means that you need to start considering now how to keep your skin looking and feeling healthy in the sun’s glare. Fortunately, getting skin ready for summer isn’t that different than what you may already do to maintain healthy skin during the winter.

Eat Healthy Foods

Salads featuring plenty of dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and other skin-healthy foods like avocado and broccoli can be a solid foundation for your skin care regimen. Feasting upon foods rich in antioxidants will help protect your skin from the sun’s damaging effects.

Foods rich in beta-carotene and other carotenoids help your skin to ward of the negative effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. These rays are their strongest during the summer, so ensuring your skin gets the antioxidants that it needs may aid in preventing sun damage.

Stay Hydrated

Your skin may become dry with lengthy exposure to the sun’s heat and UV rays. Getting skin ready for summer means drinking plenty of water every day. If you haven’t already, start the habit of consistently moisturizing your skin with creams and ointments. While moisturizers won’t protect your skin from the sun’s rays, they will help your skin stay hydrated.

Keeping your skin hydrated helps to reduce the physical stress caused by the elements of summer.

Stay in the Shade

Getting limited sun can be healthy for your skin, but take care not to over-indulge. That first hot, sunny day may seem like the perfect time to indulge in the outdoors, but it can cost you a painful sunburn or worse. Each time that your sun gets burned, your risk for skin cancer increases.

Be sure to apply sunscreen evenly and liberally and don’t forget to reapply at least every two hours.
