Benefits of a Breast Lift
As the body ages, the skin and supporting structures of the breast lose their natural elasticity. As a result, the breasts can begin to stretch and sag. Pregnancy, nursing and weight fluctuations also contribute to changes in the shape and volume of the breasts. A breast lift restores breasts to a more youthful position and contour. Although a breast lift can be performed without implants, it’s very common to combine a breast lift with breast augmentation when added volume is desired.
A breast lift, technically referred to as mastopexy, can improve the appearance of aging or sagging breasts. During surgery, excess skin is removed and the surrounding tissue is tightened to reshape and create the new breast shape. The nipple and areola (the darker skin around the nipple) will be reshaped and repositioned to a more youthful location on the breast during a breast lift. A breast lift may be combined with a variety of other procedures including liposuction and abdominoplasty for a more comprehensive rejuvenation when indicated.
Our team understands that every woman’s body is different. That’s why we focus on providing an individualized approach toward breast enhancement that will bring out the best in each woman’s body. To accomplish this, we offer different options for breast lift surgery.
- Full Breast Lift – For a full breast lift, our surgeons will determine what incisions are needed to provide the optimal results. Our surgeons are skilled in several types of breast lifts and will determine the best method in consultation with you. The most common breast lift includes three incisions: a circle around the areola, a line from the areola to the base of the breast, and another line that follows the crease below the breast (inframammary scar). Our surgeons are also skilled in the vertical pattern breast lift, which omits the inframammary scar. In either case, excess skin will be removed, the remaining breast tissue and skin will be reshaped and the nipple will be repositioned to create a more youthful breast appearance.
- Modified Breast Lift – The modified breast lift has fewer incisions than the full breast lift, but generally cannot achieve the same amount of correction. The crescent lift removes skin from the top of the breast via an incision along the areola, which raises the nipple slightly. Modified breast lifts are used to address less severe degrees of breast aging or sagging.
Recovery and Results
Most women experience some initial discomfort along with swelling and bruising right after their breast lift. Tightness is also common, especially if the procedure was combined with breast augmentation. Taking over-the-counter pain medications (as approved by your surgeon) and applying cold compresses can help. You’ll notice a change in the appearance of your breasts immediately. As swelling continues to dissipate over the coming weeks, your final results will be revealed. Most women can return to work in a week or two.
A breast lift from the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Central Texas can help you feel more confident about your breast appearance. Most women also notice a new boost in their self-esteem following breast enhancement procedures as a result of feeling more positive about their body.
