My Passion for Healthcare

While in college, I became interested in speech, language and the brain. I obtained a Ph.D. in Speech Science/Psychology from Ohio State University, then taught in college awhile but decided to pursue medicine. I wanted to learn more about the brain and help people with neurological disorders. At Ohio State, I worked with delayed auditory feedback (DAF), the phenomenon of hearing your voice back delayed like shouting in a tunnel. I learned that people with speech impediments do better talking with DAF, and became intrigued with the power and plasticity of the nervous system.

My Clinical Focus

I am strongly committed to making the lives of my patients better. My focus is to treat modifiable risk factors that either cause neurologic disease or worsen the disease. I encourage my patients to work with me in treating their neurological problem and often give them reading material and references so they can become proactive in their treatment. I have found that when patients know more about the brain or nervous system condition they have, they become more confident in the treatment they are following, and feel more empowered. Fear of the unknown can be distressing and disheartening.
