In a small, close community like Smithville, Texas, everyone is ready to step up and fill a role to find solutions to problems that arise. The nurses at Ascension Seton Smithville Hospital are certainly no exception.
One example was described in the nomination process for 2019 Nurse of the Year, Robert Gillespie, RN. Robert works as charge nurse in the Ascension Seton Smithville emergency department. One day a homeless patient showed up with her dog. Robert was on duty and made calls to have others bring in snacks for her to take with her. He also went above the call of duty and found a bag of dog food so that neither the patient nor the dog would leave hungry.
Robert is described as a true leader who likes to share his knowledge and experience with other staff. He is very involved in the local Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) chapter and has spent many of his vacations going to ENA conferences. Bringing that knowledge back to his team, this year he has shared information from “Stop the Bleed” classes and the use of tactical tourniquets for bleeding patients.
