Leave No Patient Behind: Ascension Seton Southwest Implements Tele-Triage in Emergency Department
The Emergency Department (ED) at Ascension Seton Southwest (SSW) has nine beds and only one physician at times. The percent of patients who were leaving the ED without being seen (LWBS) was increasing and before the start of the tele-triage project, the LWBS rate was averaging 3.5 percent when the target goal was under 1 percent.

Patient comments collected during HCAHPS surveys (“Voices of the Patient”) provide an important source of information for nurse leaders to identify trends and opportunities for improvement in patient care. ED Creates Alternative Care Sites to Tackle High Patient Volumes
During cold and flu season, the Emergency Department (ED) at Dell Children’s Medical Center (DCMC) experiences major surges in patient volumes. While typically treating an average of 190 patients per day, the ED treated an average of 237 patients per day during the last cold and flu season.
Shoal Creek Nurses Supporting ECT Patients
Seton Shoal Creek offers electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) as a treatment for patients with severe and/or treatment-resistant depression. Approximately, 60 patients underwent ECT at Ascension Seton Shoal Creek last quarter.
Dell Seton Establishes RN/Medical Resident Council
In November 2018, Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas created the first RN/Resident Council as part of its pursuing excellence initiative. The goal of the Council is to improve communications between RNs and medical residents and ultimately improve patient care.

Daily Nursing Huddles Improve Patient Experience at Ascension Providence
Beginning in November 2018, nursing units at Ascension Providence Health Center in Waco initiated Daily Nursing Huddles. Dell Children’s Opens Grace Grego Maxwell Mental Health Unit
On May 21, 2018 Dell Children’s Medical Center (DCMC) opened the Grace Grego Maxwell Mental Health Unit. With philanthropic support from the community, DCMC built the unit to provide coordinated and comprehensive care for children and teens ages 6 to 17 years old.

Turnover-Time Teamwork at SMCA Surgical Services
Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin (SMCA) has 26 Operating Rooms (OR) and approximately 50-60 surgeries on the schedule each week day. One common metric used to measure OR efficiency is turn-over-time, the time from when one surgeon’s patient leaves the OR and goes to recovery to the time the surgeon’s next patient is rolled into the OR (commonly referred to as “wheels out to wheels in”).
Ascension Seton Hays working towards Level II Trauma Designation
Opened in 2009 as a community hospital to serve rapidly-growing Hays County, Ascension Seton Hays has evolved into as a regional center for complex trauma care. Throughout 2018, the nursing team at Ascension Seton Hays has been working closely with hospital leadership in pursuit of a Level II Trauma Designation.
New Burn Program at Dell Seton Medical Center Expanding and Innovating
Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas at Austin (Dell Seton) opened its burn unit in 2017 when the new teaching hospital first opened its doors to the public. In the past year, the burn program has grown to serve even more patients, while providing the highest level of care in the region.
