Why choose a pediatric specialist for orthopedics?
The Dell Children’s orthopedics program offers specialty care for children with a variety of orthopedic problems, from sports injuries to broken bones and congenital bone conditions.
Kids are special when it comes to orthopedic care, because they have cartilage growth plates in the bones — the spots where muscles and tendons attach. These can become weak or inflamed with excessive stress, and depending on a child’s growth they may be more prone to certain injuries.
“It’s important for kids to have an orthopedic specialist because children are not little adults,” said Jay Shapiro, MD, Dell Children’s pediatric orthopedic surgeon. “Their bodies and bones are still growing and getting the right care is important to having successful health outcomes later in life.”
In addition to the national ranking, Dell Children’s is the only Pediatric Level I Trauma Center in Central Texas. This is the highest level of trauma care available, nationally accredited by the American College of Surgeons.
