Statesman Cap 10K Race Proceeds to Expand, Enhance Care at Dell Children’s

AUSTIN, Texas – (March 6, 2013) – For the second year in a row, Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas will be the sole beneficiary of the Austin American-Statesman’s Capitol 10,000, the largest 10K race in Texas, set for April 7.

Donations and proceeds from the race will help to complete a new, third bed tower at Dell Children’s as part of the Building for the Future fundraising campaign. The campaign will support the hospital’s expansion and purchase of state-of-the-art medical equipment to enhance medical care for children and families in Central Texas and beyond. The new, three-story tower will add 72 beds, increase existing specialty care services and create new programs not currently available in the region such as Central Texas’ first pediatric inpatient rehabilitation unit.

“With support from the community, we are able to grow our outstanding patient care services, ensuring that our region’s children continue to receive the very best health care close to home,” said Sr. Teresa George, Dell Children’s president and chief operating officer. “Thank you, Central Texas, for bringing us closer to the finish line for this campaign.”

Construction began in October 2011 and the additional facilities are expected to be ready for patients in May 2013.

The new pediatric inpatient rehabilitation unit will serve kids up to age 18 recovering from complex surgeries and complicated illnesses, including orthopedic, trauma and brain surgeries, as well as cancer, stroke and more. The tower will also house an expanded and upgraded epilepsy monitoring unit, permitting Dell Children’s to serve a greater number of children and adolescents with debilitating seizures caused by epilepsy.

“Over the years, this race has given more than $2.7 million to the community,” says Colleen Brewer, vice president of Sales and Marketing for the Austin American-Statesman. “Cap 10K is about having fun and enjoying our beautiful city, but most of all, it’s about working hard to give back.”

The Statesman Cap 10K is presented by H-E-B and will start at Barton Springs Road and South Congress Avenue near the Austin American-Statesman. The race finishes on West Riverside Drive along Lady Bird Lake on Auditorium Shores. Interested participants may register at
