Ascension Seton Sleep Labs

Many sleep disorders can be successfully treated. Specialists at the Ascension Seton Sleep Labs can detect conditions that may be keeping you from having a healthy good night’s sleep. Trained staff use advanced monitoring equipment and computer software to record data while you sleep. Qualified physicians pinpoint the disorder, allowing your referring physician to prescribe therapy.

Sleep Apnea

One of the most common sleep disorders is sleep apnea. The primary symptom of this disorder is loud, persistent snoring. Sleep apnea causes a person to stop breathing for periods of time during sleep. This can happen dozens to hundreds of times a night. Each time, the person stops breathing for ten seconds or more, then suddenly gasps for air. Between each gasp and the next time breathing stops, the person almost always snores loudly. People who suffer from sleep apnea often experience daytime drowsiness, poor performance at work and depression. Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious long-term health problems and may even shorten your life.

Anyone can have sleep apnea, but it’s more common among men who are middle-aged or older as well as people who smoke, drink alcohol or are overweight.

Why Refer to Ascension Seton’s Sleep Lab?

  • Comfort – Each bedroom is decorated to resemble a home environment, and includes wheelchair accessible private bathrooms. Often times private sleep labs do not offer these simple comforts.
  • Accuracy – The raw data from each Ascension Seton study is reviewed by three professionals: a board-certified sleep specialist, the scoring technologist, and the recording technologist. Each of them examines the EEG, EMG, respiratory channels and other signals. At many private labs, the recording technician is the only person to view the raw data, and the physician views only the tech’s data report.
  • Trust – The sleep lab staff realizes that each patient’s sleep is unique. The diagnosis could be sleep apnea, but it also could be one of several other sleep disorders such as Cheyne-Stokes respiration, alpha intrusion, nocturnal hypoxia, periodic breathing or periodic limb movement disorder.
  • Safety – Because our sleep lab is located within a hospital, a critical response team is always available if necessary. You won’t find support like that at a private sleep lab.
