Take Control of Your Heart Disease
The cardiologists at Seton are proud to offer Ornish Lifestyle Medicine™ – the first and only program that is scientifically proven to slow, stop and even reverse the progression of heart disease.
This intensive cardiac rehabilitation program brings about its life-changing results by helping participants adopt and sustain lifestyle changes in four areas of their lives: what they eat; how active they are; how they respond to stress; and how much love and support they have in their lives. By optimizing these four elements, the program empowers them to minimize their reliance on medications, avoid future surgeries and, most importantly, re-take control of their heart health.
Why enroll in Seton’s Ornish Lifestyle Medicine program? Because of the results. The program is scientifically proven to:
- Reduce the risk of heart-related events
- Decrease the frequency and severity of chest discomfort
- Lower the likelihood of future surgery
- Lessen dependence on medications
- Lower cholesterol, improve blood pressure and bring about weight loss
- Increase your capacity for exercise
Participants are the living embodiment of these results; visit the Ornish Lifestyle Medicine testimonial page to hear their stories.
Participants experience the Ornish Lifestyle Medicine program within a small and consistent group of peers, all of whom share the common goal of reversing their heart disease and improving their well-being. Each group of participants is led by an unchanging team of clinicians, who—over the course of 72 hours—help participants reverse the progression of their heart disease.
Four Key Program Elements
This proven, non-invasive program consists of 18 four-hour sessions focused on bringing about sustainable lifestyle changes in four equally weighted elements: personalized nutrition through a heart-healthy diet, exercise, love and support, and stress management.
Who Can Be Successful in the Program?
Anyone. The question that we hear most often from potential participants is “Can I actually do it?” The answer, unequivocally, is yes. Participants adhere to the program at an unprecedented 91 percent rate, because once they enroll, they start feeling so much better, so quickly, that they cannot imagine returning to their old ways of living.
The program has been so effective in undoing years of damage to the heart that Medicare and other insurers have made the decision to cover it under a new benefit category, Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation, making this the first program of its kind to receive this level of support. Qualifying criteria for the program includes, but is not necessarily limited to, one of the following:
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Current stable angina pectoris (chest pain)
- Heart valve repair or replacement
- Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (balloon) or coronary stenting
- Heart transplant or heart-lung transplant
- Acute myocardial infarction within the last 12 months (heart attack)
Prevention as Well as Reversal
Ornish Lifestyle Medicine from Seton can help prevent heart disease as well as reverse it – which makes it a great treatment option for those with risk factors of heart disease (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obesity) and those with heart disease alike.
