Our Stroke Centers

When a stroke occurs, time is critical.

The best results will be achieved at a hospital that is set up to provide the fastest treatment possible for stroke intervention and also meets the highest standards for stroke care. Ascension Seton Family of Hospitals, in partnership with Seton Brain & Spine Institute, has earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification from DNV Healthcare at two sites: Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin and University Medical Center Brackenridge. The designation encompasses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

Ascension Seton has also earned Primary Stroke Center designation with Gold Seal Approval from The Joint Commission at two sites in Greater Austin: Ascension Seton Williamson and Ascension Seton Hays.

What do Comprehensive and Primary Stroke Center certifications mean to the community?

Stroke center certifications, though non-mandatory from a national regulatory perspective, have become an increasingly important way to reflect a stroke center’s expertise and leadership. In Texas, the level of certification determines where trauma and EMS services will transport patients for the most appropriate reimbursable care within state health department guidelines.

Comprehensive stroke centers are typically the largest and best-equipped hospitals in a given geographical area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. DNV certification is based, in part, on recommendations by the Brain Attack Coalition, the American Stroke Association, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. It is also endorsed by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

The Joint Commission – an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the U.S. – recognizes centers that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care. Primary Stroke Center certification is one of the best signals to our community that the quality care we provide is effectively managed to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients. Achievement of certification signifies that the services provided include the critical elements to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes.
