5 Things You May Be Doing to Cause Back Pain

A lot of backaches are caused by strains or sprains in the muscles that occur from overuse or an accident. Other types of back pain occur when the nerves become pinched, typically due to a herniated disk.

If you’re suffering from back pain, here are five things you may be doing to unwittingly cause your back pain.

1. Remaining Sedentary

It’s no secret that your muscles grow weaker when they’re not used. This is also true of your back. Additionally, spending long amounts of time in a specific sitting or reclining position can put strain on your back that will lead to pain.

Sitting in one position for two long can strain the muscles in your back, causing a great deal of back pain.

2. Sleeping on Your Stomach

Like sitting in a cramped position for too long, sleeping on your stomach can put a strain on your back muscles, resulting in pain. If you enjoy sleeping on your stomach, try placing a pillow under your lower abdomen to alleviate some of the strain on your back.

3. Getting Poor Arch Support

Wearing sandals, slip-ons and sneakers without arch support for too long can also strain the muscles in your back.

4. Smoking Cigarettes

The connection between smoking and back pain may not seem obvious. However, many of nicotine’s effects on the body, such as the restriction of blood flow between your vertebrae and disks, can cause back pain.

5. Having Too Much Cortisol

Cortisol is a hormone that helps us react to stress. However, when it builds up, it can cause tenseness and spasms in the neck, shoulders and back. Cortisol can build up in the body due to general stress, lack of sleep or depression.
