Five months after the start of construction, Ascension Seton opened the Ascension Seton Psychiatric Emergency Department in April, 2014. The Psychiatric ED is part of the University Medical Center Brackenridge and is the first and only facility in Travis County open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to treat anyone experiencing a mental health crisis. Almost 100 medical experts, all with psychiatric experience, will work at the new Psychiatric ED, which expects to serve more than 10,000 over the next two years.
The much-needed ED will relieve the main emergency room and give patients the specific treatment that they require. The facility has 17 rooms divided into two sections, one for “treat and release” patients and one for patients who need to be transferred to higher-level care or who must remain under caregivers’ attention for longer periods. The center was constructed to create the safest and most pleasant environment possible for patients, with everything from beds that are low to the ground to soothing colors on the walls.
Patients can come for treatment to the ED as they would any hospital emergency room. The Psychiatric ED allows patients do get the specific care they need in an environment created to meet their needs.
