Dr. Tom Caven graduated summa cum laude from The University of Texas at Austin, BA Plan II Honors Program. He received his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio, where he was an AOA graduate. Post-graduate training followed at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas (affiliated with The University of Texas Southwestern), where he served as chief resident.
In 1983, Dr. Caven began a private practice in Family Medicine in Austin and, in 1989, he joined Austin Diagnostic Clinic, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was a founding member of Travis Physician Associates in 1994, helping develop it into a large primary care group that merged with a Seton-based primary care group to form Seton Health Partners in 1998.
Since 2001, he has been vice president of Medical Affairs and medical director at University Medical Center Brackenridge. He formerly served as technology transfer officer for the Seton network. Additionally, he chairs the board of the Seton Medical Group, an NPHO corporation, and is the physician member of the Seton Network Risk Assessment Committee, performing risk assessment and medico-legal analysis. Previously, he served as the vice president over Seton Clinical Research and, in that capacity, supported clinical research activities throughout the Seton network.
Dr. Caven serves on the External Advisory Committee of the UT School of Biomedical Engineering, the Scientific Advisory Committee of Alafair Biosciences and The University of Texas at Austin Pharmacy Advisory Committee.
Dr. Caven will serve as the inaugural vice president of Medical Affairs for Dell Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas when it opens in May 2017.
