Surgeon-in-Chief, Dell Children’s Medical Center
Dr. Nilda Garcia was named Surgeon-in-Chief at Dell Children’s Medical Center in 2017. She attended The University of Texas at Austin where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy prior to enrolling in medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas. After medical school, she completed her general surgery residency at UT Southwestern/Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, which included a two-year trauma research fellowship. Her pediatric surgery fellowship was completed at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, California.
Dr. Garcia was recruited to Austin in 2010 to assume the role of Trauma Medical Director at Dell Children’s Medical Center. She is very active in the field of pediatric trauma. A member of various national and state committees, Dr. Garcia is also a site surveyor for Trauma Verification, NICU Verification (TETAF) and ACS Children’s Surgical Verification. She has over 40 publications in the field of pediatric surgery and pediatric trauma. Most recently she was appointed as the director of surgical quality at Dell Children’s Hospital. Dr. Garcia holds an academic appointment of Associate Professor of Surgery and Perioperative Care with Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
Since arriving in Austin, Dr. Garcia was voted “Top Doctors in Austin” by Austin Monthly. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son. She also enjoys gardening and Bonsai. Dr. Garcia is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Pediatric Surgery.
