Vice President, Ascension, and Human Resources Officer, Texas Ministry Market
Joe Canales joined Ascension Seton in December 2012 as interim vice president for Human Resources and permanently filled the position soon thereafter. He assumed his Texas Ministry role in 2015. He is working on refining a new service model for the Human Resource function and has introduced a number of leader development initiatives, most notably Evidence Based Leadership.
Prior to joining Ascension Seton, Joe served as principal of his management consultant firm, CONNECT Advisory Services. He has worked for a number of engineering, construction and development firms, helping them with their corporate management initiatives, business development strategies and project team management activities. These projects included local as well as international ventures.
Joe spent most of his career with the City of Austin, retiring in 2006 after 26 years of service. His first 18 years were spent in the city’s Human Resources Department, beginning his career as an intern while attending the LBJ School of Public Affairs. His tenure in the department included supervisory and management positions in the Employment, Compensation, Compliance and Civil Service divisions.
He served as the Director of Human Resources for 10 years prior to his move to City Hall, where he served as Chief of Staff and Deputy City Manager to two city managers. Joe was appointed by the Austin City Council at different points in time to serve as the Acting City Clerk and Acting Municipal Court Clerk while they conducted national searches for permanent replacements. His tenure provided him the opportunity to oversee a number of diverse functions and gain a wealth of managerial knowledge and experience.
Joe moved to Austin in 1978 to attend graduate school after receiving his B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from Texas A&I University in Kingsville.
