Sister Joanne Vasa, DC
Sister Joanne Vasa is Board Chair for Ascension Texas. A dedicated Daughter of Charity with varied experiences in the fields of education, formation, spirituality and mission leadership, Sister Joanne currently serves as provincial councilor for the Province of St. Louise in St. Louis, Mo. Prior to moving to St. Louis, Sister Joanne served as the mission spirituality integration coordinator for Ascension Seton. She has also been a member of the Board of Directors of Providence Healthcare Network in Waco, Texas. Sister Joanne received a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from John F. Kennedy College in Wahoo, Neb., a Master of Arts in Special Education degree from the University of Missouri in Kansas City, Mo, and a master’s degree in Religious Education from Loyola University in New Orleans.
Craig A. Cordola, FACHE
Craig A. Cordola is a member of the Ascension Texas Board of Directors, as well as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Ministry Market Executive of Ascension Texas. Before joining Ascension Texas, he served as Senior Vice President of Memorial Hermann Health System and President of its West Region, where he oversaw the strategic direction and operations of inpatient and outpatient services at the hospitals and ambulatory sites within the West Region, had system-wide responsibilities for several service lines, and led and managed the network’s long-standing relationship wtih McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. He has volunteered on numerous boards, and serves as Chair of the Advisory Board for the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston’s George McMillan Fleming Center for Healthcare Management, as well as on the board of Center for Houston’s Future.
Leo R. Dunn
Leo R. Dunn is Vice Chair and Secretary of the Ascension Texas Board of Directors. He also serves as Chair of the Ascension Texas Quality/Patient Safety Committee. Mr. Dunn retired as an executive vice president from 3M’s Austin operations in 2001. During his career, Mr. Dunn managed multiple global business units in electrical, telecommunications, and industrial markets. He has served on numerous community service boards including the Capital Area United Way, Boys and Girls Club of Austin, Make a Wish Foundation of Central Texas, Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, and the advisory boards for the UT Graduate School of Business and St. Edward’s University MBA program. Mr. Dunn served on the Ascension Seton Family of Hospitals Board of Trustees from 2001 through 2009.
Martha B. King
Martha B. King is Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair of the Ascension Texas Board of Directors. A certified public accountant, she is a former executive director in the audit practice of Ernst & Young, LLP, where she focused on the health care and insurance industries. She served on the leadership team of Ernst & Young’s Southwest Area health care and biotech group. Ms. King is also a former chief financial officer at The JI Companies, a benefits administration and risk management professional services firm. She is an ordained elder and involved in numerous lay ministries at Westlake Hills Presbyterian Church.
Steven T. Cates
Mr. Cates joined Texas Life Insurance Company on January 1, 1996 and became President and Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 1997. He began his insurance career with MetLife in 1980 and held positions within Real Estate Investments, Strategic Research, Information Technology, Financial Management, Individual Business and Institutional Business. Promoted to an officer of MetLife in 1984, Mr. Cates ended his association with MetLife as a Vice-President, coincidental with the sale of Texas Life to Wilton Re in 2009. While President and CEO of Texas Life, he has overseen the transition of the company from a small regional insurer competing in the affluent market into a worksite marketing carrier with a national presence. He received his Master of Architecture in 1978 and a Bachelor of Environmental Design in 1975 from Texas A&M University.
John E. Mooney
John E. Mooney is president and chief executive officer of SACHEM, Inc., a privately held, global chemical science company with operations in the United States, Holland, China and Japan. SACHEM develops products and services for the electronics, panel display, catalyst, carbohydrate, biotechnology, energy storage and other challenging, high-technology markets. Mr. Mooney also serves on the board for St Edward’s University and Asuragen, a biotechnology company specializing in RNA based applications. He and his wife, Kay, have been involved in several charitable entity support efforts, especially those involved in Catholic education and care for the poor.
Hal M. Whitaker
Mr. Whitaker is President and Chief Financial Officer of Englander ZignPak, a Waco-based packaging and display company. Englander provides shipping boxes, displays and retail boxes to customers across the country from five locations across in Texas and Arkansas. He is responsible for the all operational activities of the Company along with serving on the Board of Directors.
Allan “Bud” Shivers Jr.
Emeritus Member. Allan Shivers Jr. is founder and chairman of the Ascension Seton Fund, the endowment arm of the Ascension Seton, and board member of TIRR/Memorial Hermann. Mr. Shivers has an extensive list of a variety of boards on which he has served. He is also private investor.
