Warning Signs - Call your baby's doctor or Lactation Consultant if:

  • Your baby routinely breastfeeds less than 8 times in 24 hours (from three days on)
  • Your breasts are too swollen for baby to latch
  • Your baby is having fewer than four wet diapers in 24 hours by the fourth day of age
  • Your baby has fewer than three yellow dirty diapers in 24 hours by the 4th day of age
  • You don't hear swallowing or gulping during breastfeeding
  • You don't feel your milk has increased by the fifth day of age
  • Your baby seems to breastfeed "all the time" or still seems hungry after feedings
  • Your nipples hurt throughout the feedings
  • Your baby has lost more than ten percent of birth weight, is gaining less than ½ ounce a day, or has not regained to birth weight by 10 days of age

Success Signs - Feel Reassured if:

  • Your baby breastfeeds at least 8 times in 24 hours (from three days on)
  • Baby roots, opens wide, and latches to breast successfully
  • Your baby has at least six wet diapers every 24 hours (from six days on)
  • Your baby has at least three yellow dirty diapers every 24 hours by the 4th day of age
  • Your can hear baby swallowing or gulping during breastfeeding
  • Your breasts feel softer after feeding
  • Your baby seems relaxed, calm, and satisfied after breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding is an enjoyable experience
  • Your baby is gaining ½ ounce a day and has regained to birth weight by 10 days of age
