  1. What is the residency stipend?
    The PGY2 Internal Medicine Residency stipend for 2008-2009 was $42,848.
  2. How much vacation do you get?
    Can you take it all at once?As a full-time Seton employee, the resident accumulates paid time off (PTO) each month. During each 2 week pay period, the resident accumulates approximately 6.8 hours of PTO. We discourage taking your vacation all at once as that may detract from your training experience, however, all attempts will be made to honor vacation requests.
  3. Is there support for attending the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting?
    Yes, the resident is given financial support to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and administrative leave is given to the resident to attend.
  4. Is there reimbursement for relocating to Texas from out-of-state?
    Yes. You may be reimbursed up to $1,500.00 for relocation expenses. Reimbursement is processed after 30 days of employment upon submission of itemized receipts. If you do not complete the residency program, the amount reimbursed will be subtracted from your paycheck.
  5. What are the staffing requirements?
    Traditional "staffing" will not be required for the PGY2 Internal Medicine resident. The resident will participate in network clinical initiatives as needed.
  6. Description of health benefits?
    As a full-time employee, residents receive medical and dental coverage. Employees may choose between medical and dental options for self and dependents. See Benefits Summary for additional information.
  7. How is the residency structured?
    The resident is required to complete 5-6 months of Internal Medicine, 1 month of Cardiology, 1 month of Infectious Diseases, and 1 month of Orientation. Experience in Academia / Teaching, Pharmacy Administration, and Research is gained longitudinally.
  8. What are your elective rotations?
    How many electives can I take? Elective rotations have been developed in the areas of Cardiology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Critical Care, Psychiatry, Oncology, Inpatient Diabetes Consult Service, and Academia. Additional elective rotations may be developed depending on the resident’s interest. The resident may take 2-3 electives and may repeat any required rotation as an elective.
  9. Does the resident get exposure to teaching?
    The PGY2 Internal Medicine resident receives an academic appointment from the University of Texas at Austin as a “Clinical Instructor.” The resident will teach 1-3 didactic lectures in an undergraduatePharmacology course, help with a small group Pharmacotherapeutics lab, and assist as a Laboratory Teaching Assistant in the Patient Assessment course. Most residents will present a Noon Conference presentation to medical residents and students. The resident will also assist in precepting 4th year pharmacy students on the Adult Medicine rotation. Balance between academic and clinical responsibilities can be somewhat flexible depending on the career goals of the resident.
  10. What do I need to submit for consideration for an on-site interview?
    • Letter of intent

    • Official academic transcript
    • Three letters of recommendation
    • Application materials are due no later than January 9, 2009
  11. Do I need to complete an online employment application?
    Once an offer has been extended and accepted, the resident will need to fill out a Seton employment application (online at www.seton.net – apply for the PGY2 residency position). Additional paperwork is required for the University of Texas academic appointment.
  12. How is the on-site interview structured?
    The on-site interview will last one full day (approximately 8am - 4pm). The residency applicant will spend time at both Univeristy Medical Center Brackenridge and The University of Texas at Austin. A 30-minute PowerPoint presentation of a patient case or clinical topic is required. Applicants should bring three examples of their written work to the interview. Examples might include: handouts from journal club / inservice / case presentations, formulary monographs, newsletter articles, or publications.
