Interventional Neuroradiology

Interventional neuroradiology (INR) is a new growing subspecialty of neuroradiology primarily dedicated to the treatment of disorders of the head, neck and spine using minimally invasive image guided techniques.

Using catheter and microcatheter techniques, interventional neuroradiologists can reduce or eliminate blood flow to abnormal structures such as aneurysms or vascular formations or increase blood flow to normal blood vessels that are obstructed by clot or atherosclerotic disease.

Image guided techniques using small needles allow interventional neuroradiologists to diagnosis or treat diseases in the spine such as injecting acrylic glues to stabilize fractures, biopsying tumors or removal/stabilization of herniated disc material by ablation or heating.

Advances in the computer technology that provides the images used to guide catheters, needles and other devices within the body, as well as advances in the devices themselves, account for the phenomenal growth of this field.
