Below is some basic information that may be of interest to you when applying for our program.

All applications received through ERAS will be reviewed. Once your application is received via ERAS, it will go through a screening process. If you are chosen for an interview or if the program needs further documentation, you will be contacted via phone and email. Please do not call to inquire about the status of your application during this time.

*note – our hospital does not allow clinical observerships

Information on the UTMB Austin Transitional Year Program:

  • This is an ACGME accredited program
  • 6 residents are admitted each year for 1 year Transitional Residency
  • Over the last 4 years the program has matched within its top 13 choices or better
  • The program consists of 13 4-week rotations.  These rotations change from year to year but will be very similar to this list:
    • Medicine Wards (2.5 rotations); 
    • Medicine Clinics (.5 rotations);
    • Pediatric Wards (2 rotations);
    • Surgery (2 rotations);
    • ER (1 rotation);
    • Psych/Neuro Experience (1 rotation);
    • Electives (4 rotations)
  • These rotations occur in Austin.  The resident can request to do an elective rotation elsewhere, but this must be approved by the Program Director.
  • 50 students are interviewed each year
  • In 2006 the Program received and reviewed 475 applications
  • No observerships are offered

Criteria for applying for a 2009 Transitional (PGY-1) position:

  • All applications must be filed through ERAS according to the deadlines and requirements set by ERAS.
  • Applicants must register with NRMP. Positions will not be offered outside the Match.
  • All applications must be submitted by 12/31/08.
  • IMGs/FMGs must be ECFMG certified (valid indefinitely)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Scores of 80 and above on each USMLE exam are preferred
  • No failures on each USMLE exam are preferred
  • It is preferred that International residents have graduated within the last 5 years.
  • US clinical experience with no gaps in medical training for more than one year are preferred
  • There are no specific requirements regarding who letters of recommendations should come from.  However, it is always best to choose people who have specifically mentored you or have a good idea of your capabilities, personality, and skills
  • There are no requirements on personal statement topics.
