Objective

The objective of the Austin Psychiatric Residency Program (APRP) is to provide all psychiatric residents and fellows with the maximum opportunity to master the skills and knowledge necessary for the practice of their chosen specialty.

General Description

This program provides each resident with a broad-based set of learning experiences as well as flexibility to develop individual interests. Each resident in training will perform direct patient care under supervision and attend a variety of seminars related to the clinical experiences, theory and research.

The program also includes regularly scheduled Journal Clubs, Grand Rounds, classes and seminars, and other selected conferences. Each Wednesday is set aside for seminars for psychiatry for residents, and residents are excused from rotation sites to attend the seminars. All residents are required to attend regularly scheduled conferences dealing with emergency medical situations. Residents are required to make presentations in classes, case conferences, and Grand Rounds, to multi disciplinary staff at rotation sites.

Residents have access to a well-maintained library which contains a full array of texts, journals, and periodicals. In addition, the library will obtain any further material requested through a network of systems. Computer search systems are readily available for individual use by the residents.

Twenty-four hour emergency care, both in physical and psychiatric medicine, is available and is augmented by consultants and by affiliations with local hospitals and agencies.

Legal aspects of psychiatry and commitment procedures are available clinically in the first and third years, with seminars enhancing this knowledge throughout training. Residents participate, with supervision, in court commitment procedures as part of their overall function.

Resident supervision is provided by the clinical staff on site at every rotation. Psychotherapy supervision is provided in addition to the clinical supervision.

The progress of each resident is monitored by regular evaluations by the clinical supervisors and psychotherapy supervisors. The Director of Residency Training reviews all evaluations and meets with each resident to discuss her/his progress at least every six weeks.

By means of supervision, seminars, lectures, readings and conferences, the resident is able to learn the information necessary for thorough and competent evaluation, diagnosis and multi modal treatment of mental disorders by the completion of training.
