Mental illnesses can affect individuals of any age, religion, race, or socioeconomic level. Untreated, they lead to significant suffering, disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, suicide and loss of self-realization. The best treatments for mental illnesses are highly effective; most individuals experience significant reduction of symptoms and thus reduce the impact of their illness so that they may lead more fulfilling and independent lives. We find that providing this treatment is the most meaningful and satisfying work a physician can choose.
The UT Southwestern Psychiatry Residency Program at Seton Family of Hospitals is designed to ensure that its graduates are able to deliver exceptional psychiatric care to patients from diverse backgrounds. Our graduates will possess sound clinical judgment, necessary skills, and practical knowledge about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of psychiatric disorders, as well as other common medical and neurological disorders that relate to the practice of psychiatry. Our graduates will have an awareness of their own strengths and limitations and recognize the necessity for continuing their professional development throughout their careers.
Our program will attempt to integrate the neuroscience, genetic, psychological, sociological, cultural and spiritual perspectives to help residents build a broad conceptual framework for understanding the inevitable advances in the treatment of individuals with mental illness. Our well-rounded clinical teaching staff and comprehensive didactic schedule taught by esteemed specialists will ensure that residents have the tools to build this framework. The training experiences at the UT Southwestern Psychiatry Residency Program at Seton Family of Hospitals include a remarkably wide variety of patient populations and delivery systems - the residents will have exposure to private sector, community, university, state, federal, and Veterans Affairs healthcare systems.
While we exist to prepare physicians for careers as psychiatrists, we are keenly aware that our graduates are the future of psychiatry. The capability of psychiatrists to impact the lives of individuals who are suffering from mental illness is both a gift and a challenge. We embrace this crucial challenge and enthusiastically welcome applicants prepared to partner with us.
