The mission of the Family Practice Program is to mold competent, compassionate family practice physicians to care for the entire family. Committed to quality prevention and treatment, the Family Practice program fosters a positive learning environment for physicians, patients, faculty and staff in a family-oriented setting.

Twenty-one residents, seven full-time faculty members and various part-time faculty members comprise the Family Practice Program. The faculty and residents operate the Blackstock Family Health Center and see nearly 20,000 patients a year. The wide-variety of patients enables residents to develop a proficiency in caring for patients regardless of background or education level.

In addition to providing primary care for patients, the Blackstock Family Health Center also runs a procedures clinic, a diabetes clinic and an anticoagulation clinic for patients. Physicians provide low-risk obstetric care, and the Center participates in the Primary Care Pharmacy Residency sponsored by the University of Texas College of Pharmacy, which staffs a pharmacotherapy clinic.

Through the Family Practice Program training, physicians learn to understand and respond to the needs of the community through research, patient education and community service, which in turn enables them to be well prepared for a future in private practice, public health or rural care.
