Scope of practice is defined as the activities that an individual health care provider performs in the delivery of patient care. Scope of practice reflects the types of patients for whom the advanced practice nurse can care; what procedures/activities the advanced practice nurse can perform; and influences the ability of the advanced practice nurse to seek reimbursement for services provided.
The advanced practice nurse must submit an application for a controlled substances registration to the Texas Department of Public Safety (TX DPS). Applications may be obtained by calling (512) 424-7293 or by submitting a query through the web form at: https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/RegulatoryServices/narcotics/narccsr.htm. You must have a prescriptive authority number that has been issued by the Texas Board of Nursing before you may submit the controlled substance registration form. After the controlled substances permit has been issued, the advanced practice nurse may apply for a DEA registration number. DEA applications may be obtained via the DEA's web site at http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/. You may also call your local DEA office. Phone numbers can be found on http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/agency/domestic.htm.
