General Surgery

Surgery is an optimal treatment for a variety of abdominal conditions, many of which fall under the specialty of General Surgery. Abdominal surgery has traditionally been performed through a fairly large incision; but more recently less-invasive techniques such as laparoscopy have allowed general surgeons to perform several of those procedures through much smaller incisions. As a result, patients can usually benefit from a quicker recovery and experience less pain.

The da Vinci Surgical System takes minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to the next level by adding enhanced visualization and more precise control by the doctor, which also allows for more complex surgical procedures.

Removing a portion of one’s colon may be necessary treatment for those with a variety of conditions such as cancer, polyps, inflammatory diseases or diverticulosis. Traditional open surgery requires a long incision along the middle of the patient’s abdomen. When utilizing the da Vinci system, most of the procedure is performed through 1-2 cm incisions. An additional incision is made just large enough to remove the diseased portion of the colon from the abdomen.

The da Vinci difference for colectomy

Patients recovering from a robotic-assisted colectomy typically experience less post operative pain, leave the hospital sooner and resume normal activities more quickly.

Anti-Reflux Surgery

Some causes of severe heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) do not respond adequately to medications. In many cases, patients suffering from GERD also have a significant hiatal hernia — a herniation of the stomach through the diaphragm and up into the chest cavity — which can also promote reflux of acid.

The da Vinci difference for fundoplication

Fundoplication is a surgical procedure that effectively controls acid reflux and also allows for reparation of a hiatal hernia. The da Vinci system gives doctors enhanced vision and precision, which in turn may facilitate patient safety and overall effectiveness.

Other Procedures

The da Vinci Surgical System can also be used to perform other gastrointestinal procedures including gallbladder surgery, solid organ surgery, lymph node removal, adrenalectomy and other procedures.

More da Vinci® Applications

Seton Austin also has specialists certified to apply the da Vinci System to certain cardiothoracic, gynecologic and urologic surgical procedures.

While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci® System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.
