James R. Cullington, MD, is board certified by the American Board of General Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and subsequently completed an internship and residency at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Cullington then did his plastic surgery residency/microsurgery at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver.Dr. Cullington is a member of many professional societies and has had numerous teaching opportunities. He has received several honorable appointments in the field, including his time as Chief of Surgery, Vice Chief of Staff, and Chief of Staff, respectively, at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. Dr. Cullington has an extensive list of awards and honors recognizing his continuing service in the medical field. He is a founding member of a group of local physicians and medical personnel called Austin Smiles who perform medical missions to Central America and South America to perform cleft lip and palate surgery. It was for this work that Dr. Cullington received a Presidential Citation Award from George Bush, President of the United States, signifying Outstanding Humanitarian Achievements.
