Bio

Dr. Shelby Carter is an orthopaedic surgeon, certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a member of the Texas Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Carter graduated with honors from New York University School of Medicine in New York City in 1980. He then trained in general surgery at The Medical College of Virginia. After two years of general surgery, he entered the United States Air Force as a flight surgeon. During this time, he practiced aerospace medicine and flew with the FB-111 and KC 135 Air Force crews.

Subsequently, Dr. Carter completed a four year residency in orthopaedics at The Medical College of Virginia and the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. He then served as the chief of orthopaedics at Offut Air Force Base and was on the staff at the University of Nebraska and Creighton University as a clinical instructor in orthopaedics. Dr. Carter began his private practice in Austin in 1990.

His orthopaedic practice centers on joint replacement, sports medicine and fracture care. His practice utilizes the most advanced techniques available today. This includes fully arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, computer navigated hip and knee surgery and minimally invasive procedures of joint replacement.

His commitment to excellence in surgery and patient care has led Dr. Carter to be honored by his colleagues for numerous awards. He was elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America, 2003-present; Super Doctors of Texas, 2004-present; and Austin Monthly’s Best Doctor Selections for both years of the survey, 2004 and 2007.
