Dr. Cauthen is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine where he was a Hand Scholar. After completing his internship and residency at the University of Virginia, he continued service as Chief Resident. Dr. Cauthen continued his training at the Cleveland Clinic in Cardiovascular Medicine and Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Medicine. He also served as Chief Fellow from 2010-2012. During his training he has received awards for education and clinical excellence. Dr. Cauthen has extensive research in developmental biochemistry, heart failure, cardiorenal syndrome and medical informatics which have resulted in numerous abstracts, peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
Dr. Cauthen has clinical interests in congestive heart failure, advanced mechanical circulatory support, ventricular assist devices (VADs), heart transplantation, cardiomyopathies, pulmonary hypertension, cardio-oncology, obesity related cardiomyopathy, and undifferentiated shortness of breath.
