AUSTIN, Texas - (Aug. 25, 2014) - A new video posted today provides a behind-the-scenes look at the thinking and planning that has gone into the new $295 million Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas. Construction of the new teaching hospital will officially start following a ceremony Tuesday morning.

The video also is available here on You Tube.

"The Future of Care" will be the theme of Tuesday's event. Instead of a traditional groundbreaking, speakers including a patient and a medical resident (doctor in training) will address the four philosophical cornerstones upon which the new hospital will operate: improving medical care; respect and dignity for patients and their families; educating the next generation of clinicians; and innovating through both practice and research.

"Seton Medical Center at UT" will be a freestanding building, erected across Red River Street from The University of Texas' Dell Medical School. The new hospital will be built and owned by Seton Healthcare Family, Central Texas' largest health care provider, on land leased by UT Austin to Central Health, Travis County's health care district.

The Seton Fund, with help from community leader fundraising volunteers, is spearheading the effort to raise $50 million for the new hospital - one of the largest goals for a single, nongovernmental building campaign in Austin's history. Seton is investing another $245 million needed for construction and equipment. More information is available online.

The teaching hospital will anchor a platform for academic medicine and research across Central Texas while adding to the supply of doctors providing advanced medical care to everyone. It will be the primary teaching hospital, but medical residents also will train at other Seton facilities, including Seton Medical Center Austin and Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, as well as other places in the community.
