AUSTIN, Texas - (Jan. 27, 2010) - The Seton Family of Hospitals has signed on for another year as the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon's medical sponsor, an agreement that provides the race with 24 aid stations and more than 200 medical professionals. Returning for the eighth consecutive year, Seton will staff both the marathon and half marathon courses during the Feb. 14 race.
"The Austin Marathon is such an important event for our vibrant city and active fitness culture here in Central Texas, so we want to be sure we're part of that year after year," said Dr. Pierre Filardi, Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas Anesthesiologist and Austin Marathon and Half Marathon Medical Director.
As Austin's largest race, the city's biggest healthcare provider is an ideal partner. Seton will staff the races with more than 200 medical and non-medical volunteers from doctors and nurses to physical therapists and other support staff.
"With around 13,000 participants, it takes a great deal of support to put on the race, so Seton fills a critical role in making sure our runners are safe," said Austin Marathon race director John Conley. "We're very fortunate that Seton has been our medical partner for so many years since their army of experts know just what to expect on race day. We know our runners are always in good hands."
With a fully staffed medical tent at the start and finish line, as well as medical aid stations at each mile of the 26.2-mile marathon course and 13.1-mile half marathon course, the Seton team stands ready to immediately address any medical issues that may arise.
