AUSTIN, TX - (October 20, 2009) - Americans with disabilities are an underutilized resource of ambition, talent and skill. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 50 million Americans of all ages have a disability. Of the estimated 33 million persons with disabilities aged 16-64, only 18.6 million are employed. With accommodations there could be many capable workers in this population.

"Raising awareness and focusing on abilities rather than disabilities serves our mission to treat every individual with dignity and respect," said Geronimo Rodriguez, Vice President of Diversity and Community Outreach for the Seton Family of Hospitals. "We are ensuring that people with disabilities make important contributions and are valued Seton associates."

The third-annual Seton Disability Employment Awareness Information Fair is an opportunity for all Seton associates and members of the community to learn about Seton resources, Project SEARCH, community programs and other resources that are available to individuals with disabilities.

Employing persons with disabilities:

  • Allows for future growth by tapping into a qualified workforce;
  • Enhances the ability to provide quality access and care for all patients and their families;
  • Supports Seton's mission, vision and values.

In 2007, Seton received the Employer of the Year Award from Goodwill Industries of Central Texas. In August 2008, Seton received the Health Care Heroes Employer of the Year Award and in October 2009, Seton was honored with the Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities Large Employer Award.

"Seton, our associates and the community benefits when we provide individuals with disabilities opportunities to work," said Mel Greene, Seton's Director of Diversity and Inclusion.
