Academic medicine is responsible for thousands of life-saving medical discoveries—many of which are huge commercial successes.
Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, for example, developed the childhood Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, the first approved for infants since the polio vaccine. Not only has the vaccine reduced the incidence of bacterial meningitis by an estimated 90 percent, it has generated royalty incomes in excess of $43 million, half of which has been reinvested in the University.
