AUSTIN, Texas – (Aug. 14, 2014) – Seton Healthcare Family has received a $1,000,001 donation from the Austin-based Shivers Cancer Foundation to fund construction of Seton’s new teaching hospital, Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas. The gift is the largest single donation ever made by the Shivers Cancer Foundation.
“SMC at UT” will anchor a new downtown medical district and serve as the primary training site for students at The University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School. The new hospital, in partnership with the medical school and Central Health, Travis County’s health care district, will provide for more doctors and specialized care and transform health care delivery in Central Texas.
“Seton has made a huge commitment to expanding academic medicine by building this new teaching hospital, and the Shivers Cancer Foundation is proud to support such a major project for our region,” said Clarke Heidrick, foundation board chairman. “Local research and clinical expertise will multiply, which we anticipate will be a great benefit to people with cancer in our community.”
Seton will invest $245 million toward construction. The Seton Fund is spearheading efforts to raise via philanthropy another $50 million – one of the largest goals for a single, nongovernmental building campaign in Austin’s history. More information is available online.
“We added the extra $1 to the $1 million gift as a gesture of respect for the Lola Wright Foundation, which made a $1 million lead gift to Seton’s new teaching hospital and challenged other foundations to respond,” said Heidrick. “We appreciate the substantial investment that Seton is making in a facility that will benefit our community for generations to come as a Level I trauma center, a vital part of the safety net and a center of excellence for all of us. We encourage others in our community to step forward and support Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas.”
Jesús Garza, Seton Healthcare Family president and chief executive officer, said, “This generous gift will be invaluable in helping Seton build a new modern teaching hospital and, on a larger scale, build a new model of care that improves services for our growing population, including the poor and vulnerable.
“This new hospital also will the provide doctors, medical specialties and newly discovered treatments that now are lacking in our community. We are grateful to the Shivers Cancer Foundation for its longstanding support of Seton’s mission,” Garza said.
Seton Medical Center at The University of Texas, scheduled to open in 2017, will be built across 15th Street from University Medical Center Brackenridge and will be flanked by Dell Medical School, new research facilities and medical office buildings.
